Always dress warmly when going out. This is very important, especially if you live in a country where the temperatures get really low and you get snow. Make sure that your body is always warm. If you go ice skating, sledding, or have snowball fights, get dressed in dry clothes as soon as possible when you’re done. When your body is cold, it has to fight extra hard to keep your body temperature normal and that is when you get sick.

Get your vitamin C fix. Vitamin C is very important for fighting illness. Our bodies only absorb a certain amount and more than that is unnecessary. However, you can make sure that you get your vitamin C fix everyday by eating citrus foods, strawberries, and other foods rich in vitamin C. You can also take vitamin supplements to ensure that your body gets all the necessary vitamins and minerals that help it fight colds and flu.

Avoid sick people. This may sound a bit harsh, but the best way to avoid getting sick is to avoid sick people. It gets tricky if one of your family members get sick and you live with them. Try not to be in their vicinity when they sneeze or cough and also make sure to wash your hands when you were with them. Germs get spread quickly and without you even noticing. Also, if you do get sick, stay home and get better instead of going to work or school and making other people sick too.

Get your flu shot. Flu shots are controversial and not everyone agrees that they help. However, they do offer some fight against getting the flu and if you can get it, go for it. You will be glad that you did when you don’t get sick and struggle to get better. Colds and flu have become more resilient and it seems that once they catch you, they don’t let go easy.

Stay active. In winter, we tend to want to just lie in front of the television or stay in bed as long as possible. Sure, you should do that every now and then. However, if you want to keep your body healthy and reduce your risk of catching a cold, you need to stay active. When you’re active, your body is healthy and will be better able to fight germs. Go for a run or a walk or visit the gym at least three times a week, or play a game of basketball, or go ice skating. It doesn’t matter what you do, just stay active and don’t go into hibernation mode. Always remember to stay warm and get rid of wet clothes as soon as possible.
